Candler

Learn Candler in a few minutes.

One short video for each part of the dashboard, recorded on a demo store. Every video has narration and captions, and the steps are written out under it if you'd rather read.

Start with the tour.

About a minute on where everything is: the overview, recordings, the reports that find problems, your store's sales and settings.

Read the 8 steps
  1. This is the Overview. It sums up how your store did for the dates you pick.
  2. Change the dates here. Every report follows along.
  3. Latest orders, recordings, and the pages where people get frustrated are one click away.
  4. Under Watch, Live shows who is on your store right now. Recordings has every visit.
  5. Find problems is where you go to learn what is getting in the way of a sale.
  6. Store has your sales, products, pages and visitors.
  7. Settings holds your install code, privacy options, team and plan.
  8. That's the whole map. The other videos go deeper on each part.

Get set up.

Put Candler on your store, add another store, and give your staff their own logins.

Install Candler on any website

Shopify, Squarespace, Webflow, or a site you built yourself. Play video, 1:02
Read the 11 steps
  1. Your tracking code lives in Settings.
  2. Open the Installation tab.
  3. This is your code. It loads in the background and never slows the page down.
  4. Click Copy code.
  5. Paste it into every page of your site, just before the closing head tag.
  6. Most site builders have a box for header code. On Shopify it's theme.liquid, in Online Store, Themes, Edit code.
  7. On WordPress, use the Candler plugin instead. There's a separate video for that.
  8. Once it's pasted, come back and click Verify installation.
  9. Candler loads your site and looks for the code.
  10. Connected means data is arriving. If it says not detected, clear your page cache and try again.
  11. Last step: open your site in another browser. You'll show up under Live within a few seconds.

Watch what shoppers do.

Watch a visitor's recording

See exactly what a shopper saw, clicked and skipped. Play video, 0:58
Read the 9 steps
  1. Open Recordings. Every visit to your store is here, newest first.
  2. The tags show what happened on each visit: a purchase, a rage click, an abandoned checkout.
  3. Quick filters narrow the list. Here, only visits with rage clicks.
  4. Click a visit to open it.
  5. Press play. The line behind the pointer shows where they moved.
  6. Speed it up here. Quiet stretches are skipped for you.
  7. Events lists everything they did. Click one to jump straight to it.
  8. Red marks on the timeline are rage clicks. Orange ones are clicks that did nothing.
  9. The Session panel shows their device, where they came from, and a link to every other visit they made.

Review recordings as a team

Know what you've watched, label visits and leave notes at the right moment. Play video, 1:29
Read the 13 steps
  1. Open Recordings.
  2. A solid play button is a visit you haven't watched. Once you have, it turns to an outline.
  3. To see only the ones you haven't watched, pick Not viewed by me.
  4. Opening a visit marks it viewed, and your team can see who watched it.
  5. Labels sort visits for the team. Candler starts you with four.
  6. Go to the moment that matters. Here, the rage click, picked from the event list.
  7. Write what you saw. The note is pinned to that second of the recording.
  8. It shows on the timeline too. Anyone can click it to jump straight there.
  9. Copy link gives a teammate this exact second of the recording.
  10. Back on Recordings, that visit has an outlined play button now, with its label and note beside it.
  11. Tick a few visits to act on all of them at once.
  12. Mark them viewed, or add a label. Here, Skip, for visits nobody needs to watch.
  13. Filter by label to pick up where the team left off.

See who is on your store right now

Live visitors, and watching one as they shop. Play video, 0:54
Read the 7 steps
  1. The number at the top is how many people are on your store right now.
  2. Open Live to see them.
  3. Each row is one visitor: the page they are on, where they came from, and what is in their cart.
  4. What they're doing updates as it happens.
  5. Click Watch to see their screen.
  6. This is their screen, a second or two behind. They have no idea you are here, and nothing they type is shown.
  7. Handy when a customer calls with a question. You can see what they see.

Find what stops the sale.

Buttons that don't work, sections nobody scrolls to, the checkout step where carts get left, and the actions you want counted.

Find rage clicks and dead clicks

The fastest way to find what is broken or confusing. Play video, 0:56
Read the 8 steps
  1. Open Frustration.
  2. A rage click is several fast clicks in one spot. Something looked clickable and did not work.
  3. Pages are ranked by how many visits had one, with the element people clicked most.
  4. Click Watch to see those visits.
  5. Only the visits that rage-clicked on that element are listed.
  6. Jump to the rage click to see what they were trying to do.
  7. Dead clicks are single clicks that did nothing at all.
  8. Often it is a photo, a star rating or a label people expect to open. Make it clickable, or make it look less like a button.

Read click and scroll heatmaps

Where people click, and how far down they get. Play video, 0:44
Read the 7 steps
  1. Open Heatmaps.
  2. Pick a page. The list shows your busiest pages first.
  3. Warmer colors mean more clicks. This is your real page, as visitors saw it.
  4. The table lists every element they clicked, with rage clicks counted separately.
  5. Phones get their own heatmap, because the layout is different.
  6. Scroll depth shows how far down people got.
  7. Anything below where most people stop, most people never see. Put what matters above it.

Build a funnel

See the step where shoppers give up, then watch them do it. Play video, 0:58
Read the 9 steps
  1. Open Funnels. A standard shopping funnel is already set up for you. Here is how to make your own.
  2. Give it a name.
  3. Each step can be a page, a button click, a custom event, or a store event like add to cart.
  4. The quickest start is the standard ecommerce steps: product viewed through purchased.
  5. Click Preview to check it before you save.
  6. Looks right. Save it.
  7. Each bar is a step. The gap between two bars is the people you lost there.
  8. Click a drop-off to watch exactly those visits.
  9. These are the shoppers who left at that step. Watch a few and the reason is usually obvious.

Count what matters with events

Name a page, a button or a habit. See who did it and whether they bought. Play video, 1:37
Read the 13 steps
  1. Open Events. An event is anything a visitor does that you want counted.
  2. Start from a common one, like a visit to your contact page, or make your own.
  3. Click New event and give it a name.
  4. Then pick what they did. Here, a click.
  5. You don't need to know any code. Pick the button from the things people click most.
  6. The panel on the right counts matches as you go. A rule that catches too much shows up before you save.
  7. Leave Show it on recordings on, and every replay marks the moment it happened.
  8. Its report counts the visits that did it, against the period before.
  9. It also shows how often those visits bought, next to the rest. The two go together. One doesn't prove the other.
  10. Watch these visits opens the recordings that did it.
  11. That filter works on every report. You can also use an event as a funnel step.
  12. If your site sends its own events from code, they wait down here. Tag one to give it a plain name.
  13. A new event counts back through every visit Candler still keeps, so it never starts from zero.

Keep notes on a visitor

Name them, jot down what happened, and set a follow-up. Play video, 1:02
Read the 6 steps
  1. Open Visitors. Everyone who came to your store is listed, with every visit they made.
  2. Visitors start out anonymous. You add a name when you know who they are, from an order or a phone call.
  3. Set a follow-up so you remember to get back to them.
  4. Only your team sees these details. They never leave Candler, even in exports.
  5. Back on Visitors, everyone who needs a follow-up is listed at the top.
  6. You can also search by name, email, phone or order number from the search bar at the top.

Get a summary by email

How your store did, in your inbox every morning, week or month. Play video, 0:48
Read the 6 steps
  1. Open Settings, then Emails.
  2. Owners get a weekly summary to start. Pick any mix, for each website: daily, weekly, every two weeks or monthly.
  3. Each one goes out around seven in the morning, in your website's time zone.
  4. These choices are yours alone. Everyone on your team picks their own.
  5. Want to see what one looks like? Pick a summary and email it to yourself. It doesn't change your schedule.
  6. Every summary has a link to stop it, right at the bottom. One click, no sign-in.

Connect your reports with an API key

For Looker Studio, a spreadsheet, or your own scripts. Play video, 0:44
Read the 6 steps
  1. Open Settings, then API.
  2. Name the key after what will use it, so you know which one to revoke later.
  3. Reports can read reports. Reports and exports can also download CSVs and journeys.
  4. Copy it now. It's shown only once. If you lose it, make a new one.
  5. Copy a test request to try it from a terminal. The full list of reports is in the API docs.
  6. Keys can only read. They can never change settings or delete anything.
